Warming Foods

As we witness the off season Hawaii heatwave fade, and feel the cool night air take its place, we sense autumn shift into place. Tangelos change from a greenish hue to a bright and glowing orange; pumpkins, avocados and abui fruit fill the farmers market, and the earth chills under the fall rain.

My body changes with the season. As the earth cools, i crave foods, spices, herbs & super foods with warming properties.

The eastern perspective of health and healing attributes warming and cooling qualities to food. It suggests adapting one’s diet to the changing seasons in order to maintain the body’s optimal thermal heat.

Certain foods, such as dates and almonds posses warming attributes. Temperature of meals contribute to body heat as well. For a raw food diet allow your food to cool to room temperature, or heat your food up below 118 fahrenheit, cooking point.

Spices also help regulate the body’s temperature. Warming spices such as cinnamon, dried ginger, and cardamon, help build the internal fire. Eastern philosophies perceive the internal fire as the heat and energy required to digest food.

Many vegetables and nuts contain warming attributes yet fruit however is commonly classified as cooling. On a raw food, diet fruit often composes a large part of the diet, so creating heating fruit based recipes may be challenging.

Here is a smoothie to help maintain the internal fire during the autumn and winter. Papayas are a fruit considered to be either neutral or warming through most eastern perspectives. Dates and almonds, the liquid base in the smoothie also containing warming qualities as well as all the spices listed.

Autumn Papaya Smoothie

Papaya smoothie

1 large papaya

1.5 cups almond milk

cinnamon

dried ginger

cloves

Almond Milk

1/2 cup almonds

2 cups water

3 dates

1 tsp. dried vanilla.

Recipes may be adapted with the changing seasons to enjoy all year long. In the Summer i LOVE this smoothie with frozen papaya, creating an ice cream like consistency. In the cooler months, i add warming spices, and sometimes choose room temperature fruit over frozen.
